Scoring rules

How the score works

Every point on a Coverage Compared page traces to a term a company prints about itself or to a record a government office publishes. This page lists the fields, the points, the sources and the arithmetic.

Rules in force 2026-10-16. Facts read 2026-10-16.

The arithmetic

score = A (0 to 30) + B (0 to 35) + C (0 to 25) + D (0 to 10) figure out of 5 = score / 20, rounded to one decimal

Each fact sheet prints the line-by-line points for that company, the four part totals and the sum, so the number can be rebuilt by hand from the cells above it. The calculation is done by one script, tools/score_providers.py, for every company in the file at once; nothing is typed in by hand.

Any field a company does not publish scores zero. That rule is the point of the rubric: it rewards printing terms where a buyer can read them before paying.

What is not scored

No reviews, no cost, no customer service. Star ratings and complaint tallies from review platforms are not used for any number, because their samples are self-selected and differ by company. Prices are not scored because they are quoted per vehicle and per reader. Customer service is not scored because no public source measures it the same way for everyone. The site does not claim to have surveyed customers, shopped any company in secret or counted hours of research.

Sources and pull dates

Roster matching is by the name a company sells under, then by its legal entity where printed. A company registered only under an obligor's or administrator's name may show as not listed. That is a limit of the method, and it is stated on every sheet that shows a "no".

Order and ties

Where pages order companies, they order by score, highest first. Equal scores are broken alphabetically by company name. Field tables order by their one field and break ties the same way. Companies that do not print the field a table sorts on are left off that table rather than placed at the bottom. Pairing pages do not order anything; the left and right columns are fixed by the pairing's name.

How this site is paid

OwnersFirm publishes Coverage Compared. Click 4 Coverage is a client of OwnersFirm and pays for the card labeled "Paid placement" that appears on pages of this site. OwnersFirm is paid when a reader who follows that card buys coverage. Links to Click 4 Coverage pass through a redirect on this domain that records the click. No other company pays to appear, and no company can pay to change a cell or a score. Click 4 Coverage has its own fact sheet, scored by the same rules. Pairings that would set Click 4 Coverage against another company are not published here.

Corrections

If a cell is wrong, send the address of the public page where the correct fact is printed. The cell is changed on the next rebuild, with the new source under it and the new read date on the page. A cell is not changed on a statement that cannot be linked. Companies that change their own terms will see the change after the next pull of the provider file; until then the page shows what was printed on the date it states.
